How Are Moissanites Made?
Moissanite is creating by heating silicon carbide powder to roughly 2500C at which point it becomes a gas. By carefully controlling the conditions and elements, a silicon carbide crystal forms over a few months. The crystal is then cut and polished into a brilliant moissanite.
What's the difference between a moissanite and a diamond?
Moissanite is a natural occurring mineral composed of silicon carbide, while a diamond is composed of pure carbon.
Diamonds are the hardest gemstone on earth, with a rating of 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Moissanites are also extremely hard, but rate further down the scale at 9.25.
Moissanites have double the refraction index of diamonds. This means moissanites reflect more light and color which we refer to as "fire".
What are the pros and cons of moissanites?
Pros: moissanites are enjoyed by many because they are dramatically less expensive than diamonds. They are also ethically created in a laboratory which means a lessened carbon footprint. To some, the higher refraction index and more colorful sparkle of a moissanite is even more beautiful than that of a diamond.
Cons: because they are less difficult to create, moissanites have very little resale value. To some, the more colorful sparkles produced by moissanites are actually less appealing.
